Tonight Bravo has the television premiere of The Queen of Versailles, a popular documentary that came out of Sundance Film Festival 2012.
To me this was the most exciting acquisition for Bravo since they had the Network Television premiere of Brokeback Mountain back in July of 2008. But here is the thing… Does it matter that Bravo has the television premiere of The Queen of Versailles? While this is a great film, and a nice offering for the typical Bravo viewer to have access to, it has been available on Netflix Instant since December 14th 2012.
The availability of The Queen of Versailles on Netflix instant seems to be known by quite a few people. Check out the comments section of this Deadline Hollywood story last week. While Deadline does cater to a particular group of Entertainment industry insiders, anyone who has scrolled through the Netflix menus recently has seen this in the “new releases” category.
So will the Real Housewives of Orange County viewers watch The Queen of Versailles tonight? I think they will. Jackie Siegel looks just like the other housewives and as a result she feels like someone you already know.
Ultimately this Bravo premiere of The Queen of Versailles will help expand awareness for the film way beyond it’s usual Sundance audience which should be an exciting thing for the director Lauren Greenfield. I also think that this serves as a reminder that premiere “television” windows may eventually be less valuable if Netflix has already bought up the streaming rights first with an earlier start date.
